artist statement
Carys Tupper is a multidisciplinary artist based in Surrey, England. Her practice explores the ephemeral nature and transience of the body, as both site and vessel.
Positioned at the intersection of painting, sculpture and performance, Tupper's hybrid entities imbue their own presence, challenging boundaries and inviting the viewer to confront the uneasy spaces where definitions falter. Through the act of sewing, ripping, reconstructing, mark-making and painting, the material becomes a conduit for emotional and physical narratives. Sculptural forms bridge the ephemeral and permanent, human and creature, object and presence. The line, imbued with physical presence, becomes a testament to the human experience. Her work is often characterised by its relationship to action painting, abstract expressionism and a defiant aesthetic.
Ultimately, Tupper’s practice is a poetic exploration of the body’s transience and the raw intensity of experience.
